Daedalus
- Myth ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ (also Daedalos and Daidalos) Father of Icarus and Iapyx, he was a renowned Athenian craftsman and sculptor. In a fit of envy, Daedalus killed Perdix, his apprentice. Perdix ("Partridge") was Daedalus’ brilliant 12 year-old-nephew. Fearing that Perdix might surpass him, Daedalus threw him off the Acropolis. Athena changed the terrified boy into a partridge as he fell (this explains why the partridge hardly flies and nests on the ground). Daedalus fled from Greece to Crete, where King Minos (See Minoan) employed him to design and build the Minotaur’s labyrinth. Daedalus fell from the king’s favor and was imprisoned in a tower. This is where he built wings of wax and feathers for himself and his son Icarus. Daedalus told his son not to fly too close to the sea because the wings would not work if they were wet. He also told his son not to fly too close to the sun because the wax would melt and he would fall into the Aegean Sea and drown. But Icarus flew too close anyway and plummeted to his death. Daedalus escaped to Sicily. King Cocalus welcomed him to his court where Daedalus built a temple to Apollo. Minos searched for Daedalus with a riddle only he could solve. The riddle was to pass a string completely through a spiral seashell. Daedalus solved this by tying the string to an ant, which walked through the shell. Minos demanded that Daedalus return. Cocalus’ daughters killed Minos before he could recapture Daedalus.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ It is an updated version of the Prometheus. It was designed with Asgard technology already incorporated. SG-1 succeeds in stealing the "Heart of Light" (ZPM) from Ra and used it to power the ship (819/820 – Moebius). Other named Daedalus-Class Ships are: USS Odyssey (916 - Off The Grid) and the Korolev (920 - Camelot).
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ Colonel Everett reveals that the after the wormhole disengages, the Daedalus, sister ship of the Prometheus, is going to transport the newly discovered ZPM to Atlantis. The Daedalus should arrive in the Pegasus within four days (120 – The Siege). While the Prometheus has been retrofitted with Asgard technology; the Daedalus was built with the technology already integrated, and has an Asgard crew-member, Hermiod. The Daedalus has Asgard beaming technology as well as other things yet to be revealed. They override the fail-safes of the beaming technology to send armed warheads on to the Wraith hiveships, which makes Hermiod cranky. The Wraith find a way to block the transport. The Daedalus takes heavy fire and has to land at Atlantis for repairs (201 – The Siege). A parallel-reality Daedalus shows up in orbit around Atlantis’ planet. The team boards her and after restoring basic power, finds that an Alternate Reality Drive had been installed on Deck 9. They are able to make it back home by running the Drive in reverse; after which the ship disappears once again (504 - The Daedalus Variations). Named Daedalus-Class Ships are: USS Apollo (320 - First Strike), Sun Tzu (520 - Enemy at the Gate), USS George Hammond (Phoenix) (520 - Enemy at the Gate).

| (Tuatha Dé) Danann
- Myth ~ ANCIENT IRELAND ~ (Pronounced: thoo’a-haw day dah’-nawn) Also referred to as Tuatha de Danaan; it translates to "Tribe/People of the Goddess Danu (The Mother Goddess)." The Celts believed they were a race of shape-shifting magicians who inhabited Ireland before them. They are described as fair-skinned, red-haired, tall, powerful, and aristocratic. They socialized with mortals, yet remained aloof and superior. Their origins are detailed in the 12th cent. AD Book of Invasions. There are several theories on where they originated. One says that they came form the mythical northern cities of Tir na n-Óg (Mag Mell; "Land of the Young"): Falias, Glorias, Murias and Finias, where they gained their occult skills and attributes from wizards/bards (druids). While the Tuatha Dé were in Tir na n-Óg, four druids taught them and gave them four magical treasures. In the city of Falias, they were taught by Morfesa and given the Lia Fail ("Stone of Destiny"). In the city of Glorias, they were taught by Esras and given the Gáe Assail (Spear of Lugh). In the city of Murias, they were taught by Semias and given the Cauldron of Dagda. In the city of Findias, they were taught by Uiscias and given the Freagarthach ("Answerer" - sword of Nuada). Another origin myth says that they floated on clouds from the west (Atlantic Ocean), while another says they came on boats and then burned their boats to prevent themselves from leaving. According to the Book of Invasions, they wafted in through the air as a host of spirits. They then fought a series of battles in which they were victorious. In the first battle of Mag Tuireadh, they defeated the Firbolg (Primordial inhabitants or early gods). In the second battle of Mag Tuireadh they fought the Fomorians (A race of giants), and after they conquered the Fomorians, they gave them the province of Connacht. Although, the Tuatha Dé weren’t on top for long. After some time, the Milesians (from Mahg Mar; the first human ancestors of the Irish) invaded and conquered. The Tuatha Dé fled to Tir na n-Óg and is the origin of their other title: Áes Sidhe, "People of the Fairy Mounds." Some of the members were: Abarta, Abhean, Ai (Aoi Mac Ollamain), Airmed, Badb, Beag, Bechuille, Bodb Dearg, Brea, Brigid, Cian, Creidhne, Dagda, Dian Cecht, Eri (Eriu), Fodla, Goibniu, Lear, Luchtaine, Lugh (Lugos), Manannan mac Lir, Morrígan, Nuada, Ogma, & Sucellos.
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The Stargate on planet P3X-289 was discovered 563 years ago in the ruins of the city of Danann in the Territory of Mahg Mar. The Stargate was moved to the National Museum of History. Morrígan once controlled this planet, however, she abandoned the planet for some unknown reason. After Morrígan left, the planet became technologically and scientifically advanced, although at the cost of the planet’s atmosphere, which became uninhabitable after a cataclysmic event. They were able to create an artificial containment dome (powered by the heat of the planet’s core). The natives are taught by the "Link," which is an immense super-computer that contains all their knowledge in a database (705 – Revisions).

Dagan / Dagon
- Myth ~ ANCIENT MESOPOTAMIA ~ (Ugaritic/Semetic: dagan "Grain; Cereal"). In ancient Syria and Palestine, Baal held the title bn dgn, "son of Dagan." He was also a god in his own right. He had origins in the North West Semitic peoples, although he was assimilated into the Sumerian pantheon at quite an early date. In Mesopotamia, he was originally a minor deity, one of Enlil’s attendants. When the Akkadians rose to power (early second millennium BC), he too became more important. He was a Chthonic Fertility God and God of the Underworld (similar to Osiris). His wife was Šala (Shala) and he was father of Baal. He had temples in the Mesopotamian cities of Mari and Emar. He also had a temple in the city of Ugarit. Dagon (Fertility/Crop God) was worshiped by the Philistines and Canaanite peoples. He was second in power to El, a son of An (Anu), and father to Baal. His role in the Canaanite religion is unclear; however he was the primary deity in the Philistine pantheon. He was also the main deity in the ancient Palestinian cities of Azotus, Gaza, and Ashkelon, as well as the Phoenician city of Arvad. Dagon, along with rulers and towns bearing his name, are mentioned in both the Bible and the Amarna Letters. The representation of Dagan / Dagon as half-man/half-fish are incorrect (Most famously perpetuated in H.P. Lovecraft’s short stories "Dagon" and "The Shadow Over Innsmouth"). This appears as early as the fourth century AD. It is thought that he was confused with or associated with Ea (Oannes) or the female half-fish deity, Derceto. It is also thought that he was portrayed this way as a result of faulty translation. Learn More: Dagon – Wikipedia and The H.P. Lovecraft Archive.
- The Show (Stargate Atlåntis) ~ This is the name of one of the planets on the list of the locations of hidden ZPMs that time-traveling-Dr. Weir received from Janus. Once there, SGA meets up with Allina, a Daganian archeologist. She tells them of their legendary object, the Potentia, which is a Zero Point Module (ZPM). A Lantian (Daganian name for the Ancients of Atlantis) gave The Quindosim (A brotherhood of 15 monks), the Potentia 10000 years ago to protect. The legend says that the Lantians will one-day reward the Sudarians for their loyalty. However the Quindosim, with the rest of Suderia was destroyed by the Wraith 10000 years ago in a massive culling. The Quindosim hid the Potentia using a magic square. Allina, and several other Daganian archeologists have re-established the Quindosim and take the Potentia into hiding for when the Ancients return (116 – The Brotherhood).

| Deus Ex Machina
- Myth/Literature ~ ANCIENT GREECE ~ Deus ex Machina is Latin for "God from the Machine." In Greek dramas, when there was an unsolvable crisis, a God solved it by "magically" intervening. An elaborate piece of equipment (aka: a machine) brought the God onto the stage. All in all, it is "...an unexpected, artificial, or improbable character, device, or event introduced suddenly in a work of fiction or drama to resolve a situation or untangle a plot...(qtd. Wikipedia)."
- The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ In this episode, Baal (now CEO of Farrow-Marshall) builds a skyscraper out of Naquadah (i.e. the machine), which is a giant bomb. At the last minute, when it seems that there is no way to stop the catastrophe, the skyscraper is beamed into outer space before it can explode. The title is a play on words; Ex Deus Machina, the former god’s machine (907 -- Ex Deus Machina).
